MAGICAL CRUISE ALONG THE CHAO PHRAYA RIVER
Welcome aboard the legendary
Mekhala for an enchanting journey along the magnificent
Chao Phraya River. Once a rice barge, the Mekhala is
now a floating boutique hotel. There is no better way
to sample the leisurely life along the 'River of King'.
Just one day's journey can transport you back through
hundreds of years of Siamese culture and history.
For over 700 years, the
Kingdom of Thailand has been a waterborne culture and
even now the Chao Phraya river is still the nation's
main communication artery. A cruise on the Mekhala is
the ideal start to a journey that could lead to a trip
to Chiang Mai, the River Kwai or the Khmer Temples of
Korat. (Click to see Map)
As the Mekhala idles its
way up to Ayuthaya, a wondrous array of folklore and
river life unfolds along its banks. Imposing skyscrapers
and classic monuments soon give way to a gentle rural
pace. Houses on stills echo with the laughter of children
playing at the water's edge; women bathe in traditional
sarongs while the menfolk fish lazily from sampans.
Travelers from the west
have often described Ayuthaya as the most beautiful
city in the Orient. Indeed it must have been a truly
breathtaking 'Venice of the East' with its 400 temples
mingling across 60 kilometres of waterways, their chedis
forming a magical forest in the sky.
Our Mekhala fleet consists
of three boats with a total capacity of 19 cabins housing
38 passengers. Respectively they have four, six and
nine immaculately appointed, fully air-conditioned double
berth cabins with private bathrooms. In addition they
- Thai style designs
with western comforts.
- A deck for sunbathing.
- A cozy, covered corner
- Audio entertainment,
a library, a host of indoor games and a telephone.
