Kayaking is available in the waters off Krabi and Phangnga provinces, which boast some of the most spectacular seascapes and marine life anywhere. The sport is accessible to beginners and veterans alike, since operators offer training at the start of the trip. Most operate out of Phuket, and provide gear and accommodation.

Krabi

Bordering the Indian Ocean, this coastal province is decorated with crescent beaches and dotted with tiny specks of beautiful islands. The sea-kayaking centre is at Phra Nang Bay, which blends the rugged appeal of rocky outcrops with the serene beauty of beaches and crystal-clear water. Off its shore lie limestone outcrops honeycombed with caves and hollows and fringed by mangrove forests.

Getting there: By bus from Phuket.

When to go: November to May.

Phangnga

The uninhabited isles of Phangnga Bay are blessed with limestone grottoes, interior lagoons and mangrove forests, and are accessible only by kayak. A voyage to the interior uncovers caves with stalactites, hidden passages and submerged forests.

Getting there: From Phuket, take a motor boat from Ao Po Pier to the islands.
