Calderzzo is a newly opened Italian restaurant owned by father Antonio and son Marco and bears the family name.
Purpose built on three levels the kitchen is visable on the ground floor. Not surprisingly as Antonio is also of bathroom accessories and an agent for Fendi Casa, the restaurant has one of the most stylish toilets in Bangkok and tastefully decorated throughout with very elegant sofas imported from Italy in the bar.
The style of Marco s cooking is typically southern Italian, the emphasis on the fresh taste of the produce, delivered daily, cooked in Colivita Olive Oil from the family home town in Italy, virtually no cream or butter is used in the sauces. He only uses fresh tomatoes and where possible uses produces such as vegetables, seafood and meat from Thailand. Lamb is imported chilled from New Zealand and cheeses and salami from Italy and Australia.
The taste is 100% authentic Italian style however sensitive to the fact that Thais do like their food hotter than Europeans Marco created a special chilli sauce to make it hotter. Thai priki noo chillies were first sweated in a little olive to release the flavour, a quantity of olive oil added and then cooked on a low heat for several hours.
To start I would recommend the Verdue salad of marinated lightly grilled vegetables. They still have the crunch and the hazelnut pesto is a very pleasing taste combination. Signature dishes Ricotta Ndorata medallions of ricotta cheese, pan fried in olive oil goes as just right with the oven baked red and yellow bell peppers and black olive tapenade completes the dish. Maltagliati random cut, hand rolled pasta served with miced prawns, honey tomatoes, thyme and rocket has a light and apealling taste as does the Fettucine Calderazzo hand rolled pasta with oven baked bell peppers, capers and anchovies.
For dessert I chose the Bignes, profiterole filled with ice cream covered in a warm chocolate sauce.
They serve Illy coffee and have a great selection of grappa served in glasses designed to making holding easier.
