KHAO SAN ROAD

Once an area used almost exclusively by budget travellers due to the large number of cheap hostels and guest houses located here, Khao San Road in Bangkok's Bang Lamphu District just north of Sanam Luang now attracts young touristh who enjoy its trendy outdoor restaurants and bars. Elsewhere, there are dozens of bistro-style outlets tucked away in shady gardens and delightful cafes set in old Chinese shophouses, especially on Phra Athit Road.

Khao San Road

Khao San road itself is around 100 years old. The first hotel to open was the Viengtai in 1960 on nearby Rambuttri Road. It is now run by the first owners grand-daughter, Oravida Kanjanasoon. She can remember when the first backpackers appeared in the area in the early 1970s.

Legend has it that a group of enterprising Australian students who, having no money for a hotel, came to an arrangement with some local home owners to rent rooms for short periods whenever they passed through Bangkok.
